Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Advisor Asif Nazrul said that the murder of martyr Abu Sayeed will be tried during the interim government’s regime. He said, ‘The judiciary has independence. I cannot say that the trial will take place within this time. It is being interfered with. But as far as I know, the prosecution team talks to me, I am sure and I firmly believe that during the rule of our government, you will see the trial of Abu Saeed’s murder.’

Asif Nazrul said these things at a discussion meeting at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur on the occasion of the first martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed Abu Saeed and July Martyrs’ Day on Wednesday afternoon. Shaheed Abu Saeed’s father Maqbul Hossain was the chief guest on the stage at the discussion meeting organized at the university’s Independence Memorial Ground. 21 martyr family members from Rangpur were special guests on the stage.

Asif Nazrul recalled Abu Saeed’s heroic role in his speech. He said, ‘I am not a very brave person. But when I watched the video (of Abu Saeed) repeatedly, I felt that we no longer have the right to be afraid. A boy can give his life like this. We are their guardians, we have no right to be afraid anymore. I have never seen this boy, his sacrifice inspired a middle-aged coward like me to stay on the streets day and night in protest without a death warrant.’

Legal advisor Asif Nazrul said, Abu Sayeed’s ideal was for truth, justice and ideals. His death is more honorable and respectable than the survival of thousands of wrongdoers. Regarding Abu Sayeed’s heroism, Asif Nazrul said, ‘It will take us many years to realize such great heroism. Five more people lost their lives protesting on the day of Abu Sayeed’s incident. Wasim was a student of Chittagong College. By then, everyone knew that if they stood like this, the police would shoot them, but still hundreds of young people of the country sacrificed themselves standing in front of the bullets.’

The legal advisor said that even if the trial is a little late, the criminals will be punished. He said, ‘We have to think about everything to make a trial fair and acceptable to the whole world. We have not come here to judge like during Sheikh Hasina’s era. “We hanged him with all our might, just like during Sheikh Hasina’s rule!”

The discussion, chaired by Rokeya University Vice Chancellor Shawkat Ali, was attended by Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor on Environment, Forest and Water Resources, SMA Fayez, Chairman of the University Grants Commission, Siddique Jobayer, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Tanjimuddin Khan, UGC member, students Shahriar Sohag, Shamsur Rahman and others.
